Portugal - What's worse than crashing out during a rally? Crashing out so close to finishing that you can actually see the finish line...
Quentin Gilbert and Renaud Jamoul, behind the wheel of their Skoda Fabia R5, drove a consistent race on the gravel roads of the 2017 Portuguese WRC but retired in the final stage after a huge crash on the mythical Fafe hump.
'It was a mistake'
Gilbert said: “I didn’t have good memories of this place and I opted for a very prudent approach for the first passage. It was a mistake. I braked too hard before the hump and the car nosedived, got stuck in the gravel and we somersaulted in front of tens of thousands of spectators.”
The car blocked the stage and was too badly damaged to continue.
